The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Packaging:
The case comes in a decent quality cardboard slipcase, with a seemingly pointless flap on the cover, which is common among bootlegs. The art on the slipcase is pretty decent, some of the text is holographic and embossed, and it overall looks pretty good. The case itself is a clear plastic 4 disc DVD case. The case itself is pretty durable, as these clear ones tend to be, and despite having a 4 disc case, the series only comes on two discs, which is also common with these Malaysian bootlegs. The case has no insert, meaning the only art present is on the slipcase. The discs are both identical, but they look pretty decent.

Presentation:
I have quite a bit of experience with these bootlegs, and this set managed to surprise even me with how poor its presentation could be. For some reason, the menus and only the menus, are in 4:3, despite the show itself being in 16:9. On top of that, the menus themselves just don't look good.

Content:
The content in this set somehow manages to be just about as poorly done as the menus. I will say that it's a definite positive that it comes with the whole show, as well as the movie and spinoff ONA, but that's about where the positives end. The show seems to be a TV rip, and not a good one at that. The resolution of the show isn't great, and it can look kinda blurry at times, but its still at least watchable in my opinion. The absolute worst part in my opinion, is the subtitles. It doesn't have the English dub, but it comes with the Cantonese dub, as well as English, Chinese, and Malay subtitles. I don't know Chinese or Malay, so I can't comment on the quality of those subs, but the English sub is completely abysmal. The first thing I noticed is that the subs are in completely broken English, but at the very least they were comprehensible so it wasn't the end of the world, but then I noticed that the names of the characters were just wrong. I don't know how they managed it, but all of the characters in the English sub are referred to with completely made up names, making it incredibly difficult to follow.

Final score and conclusion:
I think that this set was overall pretty bad. There are infinitely better ways to watch this show, especially with the official release only being $20, and even then you'd likely get a better experience out of just burning your own dvd. This set is pretty terrible, and definitely not worth the $12 I spent on it.
